If you love steamed eggs, this is a must-try variation. Instead of whisking the eggs for that silky custard texture, this method keeps them whole — gently steamed in a savoury soy sauce base until perfectly set.

It’s a super quick and fuss-free way to enjoy eggs, with minimal prep and maximum flavour. I’ve made many versions of steamed eggs before, from adding frozen dumplings to fish fillets, but this simple whole egg version might be one of the easiest yet.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Quick and easy – Ready in under 15 minutes, perfect for busy days
  • Minimal ingredients – You probably already have everything at home
  • High in protein – Simple, nourishing, and satisfying
  • No whisking required – Just crack, steam, and enjoy

How It Works

Instead of beating the eggs, you simply add whole eggs into a seasoned soy-based mixture and steam them gently. The result is soft whites with rich, jammy or fully set yolks — depending on how long you steam them. It’s simple, comforting, and incredibly delicious.

Tips for Perfect Steamed Eggs

  • Control the yolk texture : Steam for about 6 minutes for soft, runny yolks, or 8 minutes for fully set yolks. For a softer centre, let the eggs rest (covered) for a few minutes after steaming to finish cooking gently.
  • Use gentle heat : Always steam over medium-low heat after the water is boiling. This prevents the eggs from overcooking or turning rubbery.
  • Don’t skip the resting time : Residual heat continues to cook the eggs, helping you achieve the perfect texture without over-steaming.
  • Enhance the flavour : Finish with spring onion, fried shallots, or a drizzle of chilli oil for extra depth and aroma.

Final Thoughts

This soy sauce steamed whole eggs recipe proves that simple cooking can still be incredibly satisfying. With just a few ingredients and minimal effort, you can create a comforting, high-protein dish that’s perfect for any time of day.

Ingredients

  • 5 eggs
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1-2 tbsp water
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • Finely chopped spring onion for garnish
  • Fried shallots for garnish
  • Chilli oil for drizzling optional

Instructions

  • In a shallow heatproof dish, mix together the soy sauce, water, and sesame oil.
  • Carefully add the eggs into the dish, keeping the yolks intact (do not beat).
  • Bring water in a steamer to a boil. Place the dish in the steamer, then reduce to medium-low heat and steam for 6–8 minutes:
  • 6 minutes for soft, runny yolks, 8 minutes for fully set yolks
If steaming for 6 minutes, turn off the heat and let the eggs sit covered for an additional 2–3 minutes.
  • Remove from the steamer. Garnish with spring onion and fried shallots, and drizzle with chilli oil if desired.
