Easy Smashed Dumplings (No Pleating Needed!)

dumplings + Pork + Recipe

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

If you’ve always wanted to make dumplings at home but felt intimidated by the folding process, this recipe is for you. These Easy Smashed Dumplings, also known as the viral Smashed Dumpling Tacos, skip the complicated pleating altogether while delivering all the delicious flavours and textures of traditional dumplings.

Instead of wrapping the filling inside, the filling is simply spread onto a dumpling wrapper and pan-fried until golden before being folded in half. The result is a crispy exterior, juicy filling, and a fun taco-like shape that’s perfect for dipping. It’s one of the easiest and quickest ways to satisfy your dumpling cravings.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • No pleating skills required – Perfect for beginners or anyone short on time.
  • Quick and easy – Ready in under 30 minutes with simple ingredients.
  • Customisable filling – Try chicken, prawns, or even mushrooms and tofu for a vegetarian version.

Tips for Making the Best Smashed Dumplings

  • Spread the Filling Evenly: Instead of piling the filling into the centre, spread it into a thin, even layer across most of the wrapper. This allows the pork to cook evenly and creates a crispier surface.
  • Don’t Use Too Much Filling: A thin layer of filling works best. Overfilling can make the dumplings difficult to flip and fold.
  • Fold While the Wrapper Is Still Warm: Once flipped, fold the wrapper while it’s still soft and flexible. As it crisps further, it will naturally hold its taco shape.

Filling Variations

Once you’ve mastered the basic recipe, try experimenting with different fillings:

  • Chicken mince
  • Prawn filling
  • Mushrooms and tofu for a vegetarian version
  • Kimchi pork for an extra spicy twist

You can also serve them with soy sauce, chilli oil, sriracha, black vinegar, or your favourite dumpling dipping sauce.

Final Thoughts

These Easy Smashed Dumplings prove that making dumplings at home doesn’t have to be complicated. They’re beginner-friendly, incredibly satisfying, and perfect for busy weeknights or whenever you’re craving something crispy and comforting.

Ingredients

  • A few dumpling wrappers store-boughtor frozen, thawed
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Sesame seeds and chopped spring onion for garnish
  • Your favourite dipping sauce such as soy sauce, oyster sauce, or sriracha

FOR THE FILLING

  • 260 g pork mince
  • 1 tbsp grated garlic
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 2 tbsp chopped spring onion
  • 1 tbsp cooking wine
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • A pinch of white pepper

Instructions

  • Prepare the Filling : In a bowl, combine the pork mince, grated garlic, grated ginger, spring onion, cooking wine, soy sauce, and white pepper. Mix until well combined.
  • Assemble the Dumplings : Lay the dumpling wrappers on a flat surface. Spoon about 1 tablespoon of filling onto the centre of each wrapper and gently spread it into a thin, even layer, leaving a small border around the edges.
  • Pan-Fry : Heat a drizzle of vegetable oil in anon-stick frying pan over medium heat. Place the dumplings filling-side down and cook for 1–2 minutes, or until the pork is cooked and nicely browned.
  • Fold and Crisp : Carefully flip each dumpling overand cook for another 1–2 minutes. Fold the wrapper in half to create a taco shape, then continue cooking until both sides are lightly golden and crispy.
  • Serve : Transfer to a serving plate, drizzle with your favourite dipping sauce, and garnish with sesame seeds and chopped spring onion. Serve immediately while hot and crispy.
