After a delightful summer stay at Mason & Fifth Primrose Hill, I couldn’t resist booking their Bermondsey location for a cozy winter getaway. Taking advantage of their special winter offer, I stayed for two nights in December. Since there isn’t much detailed information online about the Bermondsey location, I’m excited to share my experience with you!
Background & Concept
Mason & Fifth is a boutique aparthotel in London, offering “home-from-home” comforts to travellers seeking a blend of local living and modern convenience. They have two locations: Bermondsey and Primrose Hill.
- Bermondsey: Housed in a converted Edwardian factory, it features 28 private studios with shared amenities like a guest living room, home cinema, communal kitchen, and private garden.
- Primrose Hill: A heritage property offering 61 thoughtfully designed studios. I stayed here last summer and was impressed by its charm.
Location
Mason & Fifth Bermondsey is located just a 10-minute walk from Bermondsey Tube Station and a 15-minute walk from London Bridge Station, making it a great base for exploring the city. While it’s not right next to the stations, the area’s quiet charm and proximity to vibrant neighbourhoods like London Bridge make up for it.
Entrance & Check-in
Mason & Fifth provides a seamless, tech-friendly check-in process. I received a virtual key via their app, along with clear instructions via email. Using the app, I could access both the main entrance and my room effortlessly. The private home-like atmosphere was immediately noticeable—there’s no reception, but a cozy seating area and a restroom are located near the elevator for convenience.
Classic Studio
I chose the Classic Studio for my stay. Mason & Fifth Bermondsey offers four studio options to suit various needs and budgets (2025 prices):
- Classic (£120 p/n)
- Classic Plus (£2500 pcm)
- Mezzanine (£2600 pcm)
- Mezzanine Plus (£2700 pcm)
The Classic Studio exceeded my expectations with its spacious layout, featuring a double bed, a fitted kitchenette, and large windows that let in plenty of natural light (though the view was just of neighbouring buildings). While the minimalist decor felt modern and clean, I personally preferred the cozier aesthetic of the Primrose Hill location. Books and plant decorations added a nice touch to the space.
Fitted Kitchen
The kitchenette in my studio was thoughtfully designed and well-equipped with an electric hob, oven, refrigerator, kettle, toaster, and a Krups coffee machine stocked with Caravan coffee pods (both regular and decaf). For tea lovers, there was a lovely selection of Canton Tea bags, and Mason & Fifth provided cooking essentials like oil, salt, and pepper, which made meal preparation easy. Upon arrival, I was delighted to find a few thoughtful extras in the fridge, including Oatly oat milk, regular milk, orange juice, butter, and a Fatso chocolate bar—a lovely touch that immediately made me feel welcome.
While the setup was convenient, there was some room for improvement. The kitchenette lacked a microwave and dishwasher, which could have added more functionality. There was only one small pot and a scratched pan for cooking, and bowls were noticeably missing, making certain meals a bit challenging to prepare. However, the festive surprise of a Christmas breakfast hamper more than made up for these minor inconveniences. The hamper included sourdough bread, jam, eggs, fruits, and chocolates, a generous and thoughtful addition that truly elevated my stay.
Other Features
The bathroom in the Bermondsey studio was notably larger than the one I experienced at the Primrose Hill location. The vanity area was thoughtfully placed outside the bathroom, making it brighter and more convenient for applying makeup in the morning. Mason & Fifth provides high-quality toiletries, including body wash, shampoo, and conditioner, which added a luxurious touch. The room also featured a smart TV with access to Netflix and YouTube, perfect for unwinding after a long day. While there were fewer USB ports compared to the Primrose Hill property, the available sockets were sufficient for charging devices. The heating was excellent, keeping the room warm and cozy throughout my winter stay. In the closet, I found a hairdryer, although there wasn’t an iron or ironing board—these were available in the communal laundry room if needed.
Communal Spaces
The communal areas at Mason & Fifth Bermondsey were well-designed and added both social and practical value to the stay. The shared living room, located in the basement, was a large and inviting space where guests could relax, watch movies, play games, or even practice yoga. The communal kitchen was thoughtfully stocked with fresh fruit for guests, though unlike my summer stay at Primrose Hill, no complimentary breakfast was provided during Christmas.
The laundry room, though small, was fully equipped with washers, dryers, and complimentary detergent, making it easy to take care of laundry during my stay. They also provided washing powders as well.
Final Thoughts
Mason & Fifth Bermondsey lives up to the brand’s reputation for thoughtful design and a homey atmosphere. The house team was incredibly responsive, accommodating early check-in and late check-out requests. Their friendly and efficient communication made my stay stress-free.
The Bermondsey location strikes a balance between quiet residential charm and proximity to the lively London Bridge area, which is packed with attractions like local markets, grocery stores (Tesco, Sainsbury’s, M&S), and fantastic dining options. Having a kitchenette also makes it a budget-friendly choice for longer stays.
